High Waisted Shorts Are so Trendy!

Summertime is the perfect time to wear shorts and show everyone your gorgeous, tanned legs. Right now, high-waisted shorts are all the rage as they’re a good way to stay cool in the hot weather. To help you keep up with the trend and to make sure you don’t spend too much money, we’re going to show you a few tutorials for DIY high-waisted shorts!

 

1. Watermelon High Waisted Shorts

As we have mentioned before, you can’t go wrong with fruit-themed clothing! Watermelon shorts is a great fashion statement for the summer and the pink and green color scheme looks super cute. For this tutorial, you’ll need to buy a pair of high-waisted shorts from the store but you can buy a cheap one.

 

 

What you’ll need:

 

White, high waisted shorts
Black Sharpie/Fabric Marker
Pink Dye (Powdered)
Green Dye (Powdered)
Plastic Gloves
Pipette Bottle
Fabric Tape

 

Step 1: Prepare the dye

Take two teaspoons of dye and mix it with a little pinch of salt and two cups of water. Do this for both dyes and be sure to mix thoroughly.

 

 

Step 2: Ready the shorts

Mark the shorts with tape to show where you want the paint to stop. Put a straight line of tape about 1-2 inches from the top of the waistband. If you don’t have fabric tape, you can use an old ruler you don’t need anymore.

 

 

Step 3: Add the pink dye

Using the pipette bottle, spread the pink dye evenly across the bottom of the shorts and up to the fabric tape marker. Make sure the shorts are thoroughly dyed so that the shorts don’t look patchy. Then suspend the shorts for a few minutes to let them absorb the color.

 

 

 

Step 4: Add the green dye

Peel off the tape and the dye the shorts above where the tape used to be. However, be sure to leave a line of white between the pink and green areas. Once you’re done, let it dry for a few hours before putting it in the washing machine for a full cycle. You might want to either hand wash the shorts or put them in the washing machine alone as they colors might bleed off. Once they’re washed, tumble dry them.

 

 

Step 5: Drawing the seeds

Begin to draw watermelon seeds all over the shorts with whatever marker you have. Don’t draw them too close together or too big but you can draw them in whatever patterns you want. Once you’re done, your new, watermelon shorts will be ready to dazzle!

 

 

2. Bleached High Waisted Shorts

Style up an old and unwanted jean into a pair of glamorous, bleached, high waisted shorts. This way you can save money and not have to buy a new pair of shorts but you’ll also be spared from having to throw some of your old clothes away. For this tutorial, we heavily recommend the use of gloves as bleach is very dangerous to the skin.

 

 

What you’ll need:

 

Pair of jeans (should be high-waisted)
Scissors
Bleach
Bucket
Gloves

 

Step 1: Cutting the Jeans

Using your scissors, cut the pant legs off the jeans at a slight upwards angle from the bottom of the shorts. You can cut them as long or as short as you want be we suggest you don’t cut it too short or it’ll look a bit awkward. Try them on to see if they’re at your desired length. As a final touch, cut slits in the legs if you want a “distressed” look.

 

 

 

Step 2: Bleaching the shorts

Please wear gloves when doing this step! Pour bleach into the bucket until it’s about a third of the way full and try not to splash the bleach into your eyes. Wear goggles if you’re nervous. Put the shorts into the bleach wherever you want the shorts to be paler like the top half, bottom half, one leg etc. Make sure to do this in a well-ventilated area! If you can, do it outside!

 

 

Step 3: Drying the shorts

Once the shorts have sat in the bleach for a minute, pull them out and allow them to dry in the sun. If you want to be even more artsy, you can pour some more bleach in splatters across the shorts to get a marbled appearance. Once the shorts have dried, you can put them in the wash and get ready to impress your friends.

 

 

3. Ombre, Studded, Distressed High Waisted Shorts

These super stylish shorts have a little bit of everything from ombre to rips and studs. It’s not even that hard to make so you should definitely give this DIY tutorial a try. It does use bleach so you need to be careful but your hard work will definitely be rewarded with these modish and chic-looking shorts!

 

What you’ll need:

 

Marker
Scissors
Spray Bottle
Bleach
Studs
Pair of High Waisted Jeans
Gloves

 

Step 1: Cutting the jeans

With the marker, mark the length of the shorts you want to cut on the pant legs. Cut off one of the jean legs (remember cut at a slight upwards angle) and then fold the jean in half. This way, you can use the cut pant leg as a marker for the other uncut leg to make both legs symmetrical.

 

 

Step 2: Distressing the shorts

Using the marker again, draw lines on the shorts to mark where you want your distressing to be. You can put them anywhere you want so don’t worry if the lines aren’t parallel or are crooked. Now, use the scissors to cut along the lines you have made. If you want to go even further, you can fray the bottom of the jeans by using the sharp edge of the scissors to scrape away at the jean edges.

 

 

 

 

Step 3: Bleaching the shorts

Because this step involves bleach, please wear gloves and do it in a well-ventilated area. Open any windows if you’re doing this inside but do it outside if you can. Pour some bleach into the spray bottle. If you want your shorts to be darker on the top, thoroughly spray a line of bleach along the bottom of the shorts. Do the same on the back. Wait around 20 minutes for the bleach to dry and then spray on another line of bleach above the bleach line you already did. Don’t use as much bleach and spray smaller quantities. Let them dry again and then run them under some cold water and then wash and dry them.

 

 

 

 

Step 4: Adding the studs

After the shorts have dried, take the studs and cover the jean pockets or waistline with them. You can add them in straight lines, circles, or triangles, any pattern you want really! Once you’ve stuck them in, turn the shorts inside out and flatten the prongs from the studs with a knife to make sure you won’t get scratched.
