We’ve all heard the advice about getting garments for your closet that you can “mix and match.” But what, exactly, does that mean? Here are some easy-to-follow tips.

Learn about color combinations that “go” together. Ah, color theory! Don’t worry…it’s not as hard as it sounds. It involves knowing the colors in the color wheel and the three main color schemes: analogous colors (these colors “live” next to each other on the color wheel), complementary colors (these colors live opposite each other), and monochromatic colors (different shades of the same color).

For a GREAT visual explanation, check out this post from Lauren Conrad. Once you get familiar with the color wheel, mixing and matching (from a color standpoint anyway) will be easy peasy!

Shop accordingly. Know the basic colors you have in your wardrobe. Then when you shop, think about what garments will “work” with the ones you already have. The goal is to create several different outfits by mixing and matching the basic pieces you already own. That’s what makes for an awesome closet!

Experiment, experiment, experiment. Becoming a mixing-and-matching ninja doesn’t happen overnight. It takes practice. Try on different outfits in front of a mirror. Don’t forget to add in accessories, too!
