It’s a New Year and everyone is making resolutions. It’s something that I love about the New Year - a blank slate, a fresh start. For the first time ever, I had my sons sit down with me and my husband and jot down some resolutions that I wanted them to stick with and try to do throughout the year. I felt it was important - as a family - that we made these together, and this way we can all help out and make sure that everyone sticks with them. I didn’t want them to be silly resolutions, I wanted them to be practical and solid ones that would help benefit our family.

Here are 5 Ways to Get your Kids to stick to Resolutions:

1 - Cut down on the electronics
How can you do this?
Replace electronics with something your children will like -
- Go to a bookstore and have them pick out some fun books to read
- Plan playdates with their friends after school
- Head to a trampoline park or a bowling alley once a week with some friends
- Get involved in after school activities

2 - Healthy eating
How can you do this?
- Have your children help you in the kitchen
- Have them go shopping with you and let them pick out healthy snacks on their own
- Have them find fun recipes online or in cookbooks

3 - Get involved in fitness activities
How can you do this?
- Sign them up for a sport (indoor soccer, swimming, basketball, gymnastics, etc)
- Join a family gym and have them do some tween/teen classes (dance, aerobics, etc)
- Go on a family trip and make it an active one (skiing, hiking, running, etc)

4 - Helping out around the house with chores
How can you do this?
- Create a chore chart
- Create incentives for your children - (payment, TV remote control, 30 minutes of electronics)

5 - More family time together
How can you do this?
- Every night carve out a solid 30 minutes of just family time
- Eat dinner together every night
- Create a family calendar together and make sure family time is carved in

I never really thought of “family resolutions” but this is exactly what we are doing too. It’s just hard to stick to it when you feel they’re all conspiring against you! :)
