3 Tips for Girls Interested in Fashion Design Careers
In honor of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day (it’s April 28th this year) I sat down with Mary Beth Tirrell, our VP of Apparel, to get her inside tips on pursuing a career in fashion. We’ll be sharing a video clip from the interview later this week, but in the meantime, here are her top 3 tips:
Focus on your education: Round out your education with art and design skills in general, rather than focusing exclusively on fashion design. You want to develop a solid foundation of design skills to draw from in the future.- Learn to think on your feet: “When you are designing and producing clothing there are always obstacles that pop up in front of you.” Whether it is trouble with suppliers, or changes in trends, you need to be able to change direction quickly.
- Use fashion to express yourself: Don’t be afraid to try different looks. “Put together new combinations and have fun with it. You’ll feel more self-confident if you go out the door looking the way you want to look.”
Is your daughter interested in fashion design? FashionPlaytes is the perfect place for girls 5-12 to design their own outfits. We offer everything from tees and skirts to dresses and bags, which girls can customize with rhinestones, ruffles, ribbons, and more. Design a whole line (including your own personalized label!) which you can save in your virtual collection. Order your favorite pieces and they will be produced and delivered to your door within three weeks.
Exploring FashionPlaytes with your daughter is a great intro to discussing fashion design and other career options. Children love to learn and explore through online tools, and while designing together you can chat about clothing trends, age appropriate styles, color combinations, and more.
Are you taking your child to work this Thursday? What does your son or daughter want to be when they grow up?

This is a great idea. I think that if your child is interested in fashion design it is a good to find out early and get her into thinking about all the aspects of being a designer. I know this program is for girls but there is the occassional boy who makes a really good designer as well. It can be an amazing career. It gives the opportunity for creative expression and glamour and can be very rewarding.
@River: Thanks for the comment! Although we do cater to young girl fashionistas, you’re right… boys/men can be AMAZING fashion designers too! Some of our favorites are Michael Kors & Christian Siriano (from Project Runway)!
I am really interested in making fashion as my career but I have no idea where should I start. This really put some insights for me. Thank you really much.
Awesome news! We’re happy we could provide some insight into the world of fashion. Don’t forget to stay confident in yourself! Oh & it doesn’t hurt to be informed of the in’s & out’s of the industry
That way, you’ll be ahead of the curve.
