Can’t take your daughter to work? Help her explore career choices online!
The FashionPlaytes team loves the concept of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, but we realize that for many parents it can be a challenge. What if your child is not interested in your career? Or what if your workplace is not appropriate for a child?
Thankfully, there are a number of great websites that allow girls to explore career opportunities online. We have chosen to highlight sites that inspire imagination and creativity, but I’m sure that with some digging you could uncover a site suitable for practically any career.
Here are our favorites:
FASHION DESIGNERS: FashionPlaytes allows girls ages 5-12 to design their own clothing and accessories. Experiment with different styles and colors and embellish your garments with everything from rhinestones to ribbons. Create a virtual fashion collection online and customize your designs with your own personalized label. Wish you could own a favorite design? Place your order and your custom item will arrive at your door within three weeks!
MAGAZINE EDITORS: My Pop Studio provides an incredibly fun play experience for girls interested in becoming TV, music, magazine, or online media editors. You can compose a magazine layout featuring you as a celebrity, write an advice column, explore digital retouching, and more!
ARCHITECTS: Appropriate for older girls, Architect Studio 3D lets young architects explore the process of designing a home. You’ll start with a client’s lifestyle preferences, and a building site with environmental restrictions and you’ll need to use your imagination to design a building that fits all the specifications.
AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS: At Tikatok girls can write a story, add pictures, and publish their stories in professional-quality hardcover or paperback books. If you have writers block, be sure to check out Tikatok Picks for some adorable inspiration.
MUSICIANS: The San Francisco Symphony website includes a component called “the composerizer”. Girls can create their own songs by combining different measures of music. It’s fun to play around with different tempos and instruments!
