It’s only been two days, but we’ve already heard so many awesome resolutions. Not only that, but we’re noticing similar goals for the new year - one of the top ones? Eating healthier!
Let’s be real, everyone wants to be healthy & stay fit, but it’s HARD sometimes! Whether you’re still in school, work in an office, or stay at home, you’re constantly surrounded by processed foods. They’re totally tempting to eat - my favorites include french fries & potato chips - but there are some awesome “superfoods” that are not only delicious to eat, but will provide you with differing disease-fighting nutrients (w/out too many calories) & will help keep you happy & on track this year! Below are only 5 out of 10 “superfoods”. Check out www.eatingwell.com to hear more about the others!
1. Berries are an awesome source of fiber (needed for a healthy digestion & weight loss), often have ellagic acid within them, a compound that can help fight cancer, and are jam packed with anthocyanins, which are antioxidants that are known to maintain your memory!
2. Eggs are an obvious food chock full of good protein & can protext your skin from UV damage.. Egg yolks are known to have lutein and zeaxanthin in them—two antioxidants that maintain healthy eyes, lessen risk for “age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over 50.”
3. Sweet Potatoes, known as one of the most nutritious veggies, contain high levels of alpha & beta carotene which translate into vitamin A, which promote healthy eyes, bones & immune system. Try eating 1 medium sweet potato & you’ll receive four times the necessary daily amount of vitamin A, plus some vitamin C, B6, potassium, manganese, lutein and zeaxanthin.
4. Yogurt has age-defying effects - although never officially proven - because it has “good bacteria” that help regulate your stomach and decrease the chances of having a stomach sickness. Yogurt is full of calcium, which aids in fighting osteoporosis. Remember: 1 cup of yogurt will give you almost half the amount of calcium needed a day & includes good vitamins/minerals such as “phosphorus, potassium, zinc, riboflavin, vitamin B12 & protein.”
5. Oranges are in season this winter & are FULL of vitamin C which is imperative in creating white blood cells & those important antibodies that fight infections. At the same time, oranges or orange juice act as an antioxidant that reduce cell-damage and produced skin-firming collagen - so working out will be well worth it!
