February 7, 2014

Happy Friday!

I’m excited to share with you another fun trend for the upcoming spring season — bright, bold blazers!

I love a blazer because you can easily dress one up or you could wear one casually. I think they really are one of the best versatile items you can have in your closet.

This spring enjoy a blazer with some POPS of color!

Neons! Yellows! Pinks! Bright Blues! Kelly Green!

Find something with a reaction. :)

Think spring as we deal with this cold…. :)

New Feature: Inspiring Girl Organizations for Your Tween!

February 3, 2014

We’re so excited to introduce you to a new segment here at The Parents Connection where once a month we’ll be featuring an organization that empowers young women. Whether the group has to do with the arts, self-esteem, philanthropy, health, we’ve searched out some of the best organizations for your daughter and we’d love to share them with you!

This month we’re bringing you:

GIRLSTART.ORG

For girls in first to eighth grades, the Texas-based organization Girlstart empowers girls in science, technology, engineering and math, so if you have a daughter who loves to dive into her math homework, you definitely have to check out this website and the organization!

The Texas-based organization hosts a summer camp, an annual luncheon, conference, afterschool program (at participating schools), workshops, and other community programs.

While Girlstart is housed in Austin, there’s loads of information online for girls who live everywhere. The blog has interesting facts and cool experiments, and coming soon their Just For Girls section is getting revamped with some cool new STEM activities, games, quizzes and more!

What parents will love is the free online lessons, science experiments and info available to their daughters about the subject matter that’s interesting to them. The whole premise of the site is to connect girls to the STEM subjects! Girlstart has had over 2.5 million visitors worldwide and has received many awards within their community and on the web for their outstanding content.

So if you have a daughter who loves to be on the computer, and is fascinated with math and science, introduce her to Girlstart. It could connect her with some like-minded girls who have the same passions as she does, and possibly grow her interests further in science, technology, engineering and math. And that could only be a great thing! Girlstart may very well be the starting point in finding your daughter’s perfect career!

Sunday Inspiration… Follow the Yellow Brick Road…

February 2, 2014

Happy Sunday!

I saw this on Pinterest yesterday and printed it out to hang in my office.

The Yellow Brick Road leads to happiness… it’s symbolic is many different ways, but it truly does lead to your destiny.

This is something that I want my children to always remember. I want them ALWAYS to follow their yellow brick road. I want that road to always lead to their happiness.

This also reminded me that I need my sons to watch The Wizard of Oz again soon! One of the best movies of all time!

#Throwback Thursday: Fisher Price Little People

Remember the Fisher Price Little People and how much fun they were to play with? And the barns and school houses you could close up and take with you? These types of toys brought your imagination to life! They were simple and plain and didn’t come with hundreds of outfits or accessories. All you needed was your imagination and a few good hours and your afternoon was set!

This is one toy set I wish I hadn’t let go from my childhood. Thinking about it now on a Throwback Thursday brings back such fond memories, and makes me wish for those simpler times. Times without the rush of the internet, of devices like smartphones and tablets, and iPads and iPods. Just the other day we were visiting my in-laws and I looked over at my three kids, (two are teenagers and one is a tween) and all three had their heads face down in their phones.

There’s something a bit sad about today’s crazy hectic times. I do wish for simple days when we could just play with a piece of a colorful wooden toy doll, where our imagination could take us anywhere we wanted to go, where we didn’t have to wait for the next beep of a text, or a ‘like’ or a tag or an upload.

Where it was just easy to be kid and play.
