OMG! What Your Kids are Really Saying

If you’ve ever tried to read a text message or online chat that your kids are having, you’ll undoubtedly be a little frustrated trying to decipher their conversation.  As parents, we know how difficult it is to keep up with what our kids are saying in their “text” speak.  In the Style Mag, our FPgirl community, we see some of these abbreviations in our communications with the girls.  While it is somewhat of a different language, once you get the hang of it, you’ll begin to understand what they’re saying.  Below we’ve compiled a list of the most common internet slang your child might be using:

AFK:  ”Away from keyboard”

AFAIK:  ”As far as I know”

BBIAB – “Be Back in a Bit

BRB: “Be right back”

BFF:  ”Best friends forever”

BTW: “By the way”

DGA: “Don’t go anywhere”

DLTBBB: “Don’t let the bed bugs bite”

DTRT:  ”Do the right thing”

HMU: “Hit me up” (text me, call me)

FOMCL:  ”Falling off my chair laughing”

GTG: “Good to go” also “Got to go”

IDC - “I don’t care”

IDK - “I don’t know”

IMO - “In my opinion”

IMHO - “In my humble opinion”

IKR: “I know, right?”

IRL: “In real life”

JK - “Just kidding”

LOL:  ”Laughing out loud”

OMG - “Oh my God”

ROFL - “Rolling on floor laughing”

SOL: “Smiling out loud”

TBH: “To be honest”

TTYL: “Talk to you later”

TMI:  ”Too much information”

WDYMBT:  ”What do you mean by that?”

YOLO: “You only live once”

Of course there are many, many others and new ones popping up all the time!  If you have specific acronyms you want translated, we found this great  Teen Chat Decoder an online teen speak dictionary that is updated regularly as new acronyms become popular.
