Fashionable First Ladies!

February 21, 2011

Happy President’s Day!

Although this federal holiday was created to celebrate George Washington’s birthday in 1796, we’re going to take our celebration down a different road! Instead, we’re going to highlight two (of the many) awesome FIRST LADIES of who not only rocked the White House, but the fashion world as well with their bold styles!

One of the popular women that comes to mind is Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis! From childhood, Jackie grew up in a wealthy family in New York & obtained a preppy style from the start. At 5’7”, Jackie was made for high fashion! When her husband (John F. Kennedy) became president in 1961, Jackie shined in the spotlight with eye-catching designer dresses. Thanks to her signature style, she has inspired women around the world to wear sophisticated, yet trendsetting items that are truly timeless!

According to Savvy: Women’s Magazine, Jackie liked: “Chanel jackets, A-line skirts, brooches, double-faced cashmere and silk satin, single-color schemes, and the neutral hue, “greige“, a cross between gray and beige.” Jackie loved wearing boat and V-neck shirts, over-sized sunglasses, turtlenecks. Her favorite colors? Orange, pink & matching black/white! Since she was known for her high fashion picks, some of the big names that stand out among her wardrobe include Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Carolina Herrera, Pucci, Chanel & Lilly Pulitzer!

Often compared to Jackie, Michelle Obama is another fashion icon in today’s pop culture! Growing up in Chicago & attending Princeton University, American’s watched Michelle’s style skyrocket during the 2008 presidential election. As documented by Biography.com, Michelle was featured in Essence magazine as one of “25 of the World’s Most Inspiring Women” in 2007. Later, she was featured in the Vanity Fair best-dressed list for two years in a row, as well as the People Magazine’s best-dressed list in 2008.

As stated by Harper’s Bazaar, Michelle is the “First Lady of Fashion“! She keeps it classy & elegant, yet isn’t afraid to wear bright colors and prints. Michelle loves to mix and match, especially with designers like Thakoon & Jason Wu. Although she’s been known to wear high-end designers, Michelle also likes to get creative with better-priced options. She recently wore a $34 polka dot dress from H&M & caused every store to sell out of it instantly! Talk about being a true trend-setter!

So as you celebrate President’s Day (whether at work or on vacation)…

Remember that with every great President, is a fantastic & fashionable First Lady!
